Harders Cup launched in Luderitz

WINDHOEK, 29 JAN (NAMPA) – The 2017 Harders Cup, where six football teams will battle it out for a grand prize of N.dollars 100 000, was launched in Lüderitz on Friday.
A media statement availed to Nampa by the organiser of the tournament, Tim Ekandjo said what is the first edition of the event will take place on 25 and 26 March 2017.
Ekandjo, who is from the coastal town in the //Kharas Region, said at the launch at the Benguela Hall it is hoped the event will give young people in Lüderitz something to look forward to where their skills can be displayed.
The tournament will be an annual occurrence.
Ekandjo said the community faces tremendous socio-economic challenges rooted mainly in a lack of sufficient economic activities.
“Young people are particularly prone to being negatively affected by this situation,” he said.
Unemployment amongst the youth is high, which leads to alcohol and substance abuse, hence the need for more uplifting activities.
The tournament will be played at the Lüderitz Soccer Field where musical entertainment will also feature the Saturday evening.
Top local acts like S-Man, DJ Alba and Gazza will entertain the Buchters alongside Heavy K from South Africa.
Entrance to both the football tournament and the music bash is free of charge.
All participating teams will receive a brand new football kit and N.dollars 5 000 for participating.
“The winners will get N.dollars 100 000, while the runners up will get N.dollars 50 000. The third placed team will get N.dollars 20 000,” said Ekandjo.
The event will cost N.dollars 695 000 of which N.dollars 420 000 has so far been secured from various sponsors.
A Harder is the most commonly caught and consumed fish in Lüderitz and resonates with the community of the town.
