OTJIWARONGO, 13 OCT (NAMPA) – A 73-year-old man suffered multiple burn wounds after the shack he was sleeping in caught fire on Sunday morning in the Orwetoveni residential area of Otjiwarongo.
The Namibian Police Force (NamPol)’s Otjozondjupa Regional Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Maureen Mbeha told Nampa on Sunday that Shikufa Nehadi was alone in the shack when the fire broke out between 24H00 and 01H00 on Sunday.
“We are still investigating the cause of the fire,” she said.
The shack was built at the back of a brick house along Jonasi Uiseb Street in Orwetoveni.
Nehadi was rescued by his neighbours who saw smoke and flames coming from his shack.
“Nehadi was immediately taken to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital by his neighbours, and was admitted in the Surgical Ward,” said Mbeha.
According to a nurse at the Otjiwarongo State Hospital who wishes to remain anonymous, Nehadi is in a stable condition.
“He suffered multiple burns all over his body, but the burns were not so deep,” said the nurse.
She noted that Nehadi also complained of chest pains, which might be a result of smoke inhalation.
