2017 Indoor Hockey league kicks off Friday

WINDHOEK, 25 JAN (NAMPA) – The 2017 Indoor Hockey League will kick off this weekend with exciting fixtures lined up at various venues across Namibia.
In a media statement on Wednesday, main sponsor Bank Windhoek said six matches will be played at the Windhoek Showgrounds and Wanderers sports club on Friday.
A record number of teams from have entered the three different men’s and women’s leagues.
Between 470 and 500 players from 12 clubs are expected to participate in the league this year.
President of the Namibia Hockey Union (NHU), Marc Nel said preparations are going well and everything is set for the weekend.
“There are 50 teams who will play this season, with the biggest focus being on the men and women’s premier league teams,” he told Nampa on Wednesday.
Nel mentioned Windhoek Old Boys, University of Namibia and DTS as favourites to win the title on the men’s side, while on the women’s side he put his money on Saints and Windhoek Old Boys, based on previous performances.
Other venues are the DTS Hall as well as the Dome Sports Complex in Swakopmund.
The league will run until the end of April and will be followed by a four nations’ tournament.
“The United States of America and Australia have already confirmed their participation.”
The international guests, he said, will be bringing men and women teams.
The first men’s premier match for the season will be played between UNAM and the Saints on Friday at 20h30 at the Showgrounds.
