SWAKOPMUND, 22 JAN (NAMPA) – A newborn was Sunday found abandoned in a plastic bag under a tree near the road in Arandis residential area.
She is said to have been dumped immediately after birth.
A community member made the discovery in the morning hours after hearing the baby crying.
Detective Chief Inspector, Erastus Iikuyu of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Erongo Region said the police were alerted to the scene and took the baby.
Iikuyu said the baby was taken to the Arandis Clinic for medical examination and was found to be in good health.
A progress report later on Sunday afternoon indicated the arrest of a 21-year-old woman in connection with the dumping of this baby.
Iikuyu said the suspect was taken to the Arandis Clinic for medical examination before being transferred to the Swakopmund State Hospital.
“She will appear in court immediately after her release from the hospital,’’ said the detective.
In Karibib on Thursday evening, a 22-year-old man in Usab settlement allegedly raped a 15-year-old girl.
The girl allegedly went to the suspect’s house to collect her bag, which he took from her on Wednesday.
The police report said the suspect allegedly dragged the complainant into a friend’s shack next to his and had forced sexual intercourse with her.
She was sexually violated at 20h00 on Thursday and was released at 05h40 on Friday, when she informed her mother who later reported it to the police that day.
NamPol arrested the suspect on Friday and he is expected in court on Monday.
