Oshikoto man allegedly kills girlfriend, commits suicide

OSHAKATI, 12 JAN (NAMPA) – A man reportedly killed his girlfriend before taking his own life at Owiwi village in the Oshikoto Region on Tuesday.
The village is situated in the Nehale Lyampingana area.
Namibian Police Force (NamPol) crime reports availed to Nampa by Oshikoto Region Crime Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Naomi Katjiua on Wednesday said the victim has been identified as the 22-year-old Helvi Hamukoto from Oshongwe village.
The suspect, only known as Tuhafeni, allegedly repeatedly beat his girlfriend on her head with a stick, leading to her death.
He then informed the neighbours that Hamukoto committed suicide before hanging himself outside his employer's homestead.
He was employed there as a domestic worker.
It is further reported that the victim had come to visit the suspect on Sunday.
The two are believed to have a 15-month-old daughter, whom the suspect took to a neighbour before allegedly committing the crime.
The suspect is said to be an Angolan national.
Hamukoto’s next of kin have been informed.
In an unrelated event, the police at Okatope are investigating a case of negligent driving after a 26-year-old suspect reportedly drove over a woman lying under a tree in the area of Onyaanya.
The incident occurred on Wednesday at about 13h30.
The 66-year-old woman was lying under a tree when the suspect, who was trying to park his vehicle, drove over her, breaking one of her legs and injuring her back.
The victim, Erastina Sackaria, from Onadhi village, is currently recovering in the hospital at Onandjokwe.
It is further reported that the suspect was driving without a valid driver's license.
He has been arrested.
