OMAALALA, 04 JAN (NAMPA) -Ongwediva City Football Club (FC) won the Sands of Armas New Year Tournament that ended in the Oshana Region on Monday.
The team that lost the final in the same four-team competition last year, defeated GK FC 3-1 on penalties after their 1-all draw at Omaala village sports ground Monday evening.
Before reaching the final of the tournament this time around, Ongwediva City handed J Aron a 3-2 defeat on penalties following their goalless draw.
As the champion, Ongwediva took home N.dollars 1 500 and two soccer balls, while GK also received two soccer balls and N.dollars 800.
Kalola Eleven FC, also from Ongwediva, is champion in the veterans category. This club defeated the host, Omaalala Legend, 2-0 in the final and took home N.dollars 2 000 with two soccer balls. Host Omaalala Legend received N.dollars 1 500 and two soccer balls as the runner-up in this category.
Kalola Eleven beat Kalimbo Eleven 1-0 in the veterans semi-final and Omaalala Legend defeated Akuna FC, also 1-0, in the semi-final of the same category.
It was a four-team Veterans category in the tournament.
Businessman at Omaalala and Walvis Bay, Andreas Armas sponsored the tournament for the eighth consecutive year.
He sponsored the tournament this year with N.dollars 12 000 and an ox that was slaughtered to provide meals for participants.
Besides the special invited teams and veteran category, a youth football competition was also part of the tournament.
Organizer, Herman Kalimbo Paulus told Nampa the semi-finals and final of the youth category will be concluded on Saturday.
