ONGWEDIVA, 26 DEC (NAMPA) – The Roman Catholic Church at Ongwediva on Sunday celebrated Christmas with the handing over of grocery parcels to each member in attendance at the service.
Secretary of that church’s community council, Oswald Shivute told those present that the leadership of the church decided to plough back to the community through this first-ever Christmas gifting to its members.
He pointed out that the church used its own resources to acquire the gifts and 500 members were targeted.
“The council deemed it fit to withdraw some funds from church savings to buy Christmas gifts for members of the congregation and not only to receive offerings from the members every Sunday without ploughing back,” Shivute explained.
Sixty church members could unfortunately not benefit after the parcels ran out.
The church’s deacon, Albertus Ndahalele, indicated that the gifts for those who could not benefit on Sunday will be acquired and handed over next Sunday.
The church also gave out special gifts to five elderly members of the church which were donated by individual young members of the congregation.
Ndahalele described the gifts handover as a good beginning and at the same time encouraged more youngsters to contribute to church activities by also giving Christmas donations to their elders in future.
The Christmas church service was concluded with well-wishes to the attendees.
