KEETMANSHOOP, 09 OCT (NAMPA) – The Swapo-Party Youth League (SPYL) in the //Karas Region has condemned the alleged ‘racist attack’ on three young men from Keetmanshoop.
Daniel Coffee, 34, and the 28-year-old Christiaan Heydt appeared in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate’s Court on Friday for allegedly beating, kicking and pointing a gun at Wilhelm Mwetungelela, 24, Haikali Venasiu, 23 and Otto Kalimela Stephanus, 22 at Shooters Pub and Grill.
Venasiu and Mwetungelela are students of the Namibia Institute of Mining and Technology (NIMT) centre in Keetmanshoop.
The attack occurred just over a week ago and is believed to be racist as the trio accuses the two white individuals of attacking them simply because they entered the pub where black people are apparently not welcome.
The duo is facing charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and pointing a firearm.
Addressing the media at Keetmanshoop on Wednesday, SPYL Secretary for Information and Mobilisation in //Karas, Benedick Louw condemned the attack and called on the courts to severely punish anyone found guilty of racism.
Louw called on white Namibians who might consider assaulting and physically abusing black Namibians to reconsider their actions “before the young people lose their patience”.
“We want to forgive and forget, but it seems some people do not want to change, racist attacks are not welcome in the independent Namibia. I call on white communities to advise each other and stop the acts. We do not see them at reconciliation meetings because they want to remain isolated and attack us,” he stated.
He further indicated that no one is allowed to take the law into their own hands, adding that white Namibians “should stop testing the patience of black Namibians or things will turn ugly”.
“We as the youth want to focus on gaining economic independence and not on going back to the apartheid era. However, if they (whites) do not stop, we are willing to go back and do what our forefathers did. We will not sit idle and tolerate such inhuman behaviour,” the young politician threatened.
On his part, SPYL District Secretary for the Keetmanshoop Rural Constituency and chairperson of the //Karas Youth Forum, Gert Titus said such attacks “are a clear indication that some white people are still racists and have no respect for blacks”.
“It is a disgrace to see white people still acting so primitive and evil after 23 years of independence,” Titus said.
He acknowledged the fact that not all white Namibians are racists “and as pathetic as the accused” to have attacked black individuals just because of their skin colour, and called on non-racist white Namibians to join the nation in the fight against racism by calling on those with racist mentalities to refrain from such behaviour.
