LUANDA, 17 DEC (NAMPA) – Namibia’s women’s football team is through to the final of the 2016 African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region Five U-20 Youth Games underway here.
They face South Africa in the final on Saturday.
Namibia trashed Angola 4-0 in the semi-finals on Friday and also beat Angola 2-1 in the group stages on Wednesday.
South Africa, the defending champions, beat Namibia 2-0 in the group stages.
Only Angola, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe are competing in the women’s football category.
On Friday, Namibia took an early lead through Millicent Hikuam, who scored a volley from 45 metres in the 26th minute of the match and a minute later, Beverly Uueziua doubled the score for Namibia.
In the second half, Uueziua scored two more goals in the 47th and 84th minute to seal the win.
Speaking to Nampa after the game, Namibia’s coach Bryan van Staden said his players are ready to cause an upset when they face South Africa again.
He said their aim was to reach the final.
“It will not be a walk in the park but we are mentally ready to win this game as our girls have gotten stronger throughout the competition.”
The match will start at 19h00 Namibian time.
