GOBABIS, 10 DEC (NAMPA) - Lea Iipinge was on Monday re-elected as mayor of Gobabis, while Cornelius Tjizoo was re-elected as deputy mayor during an extra-ordinary town council meeting.
During the same election, Libelius Kalili was re-elected in his position as chairperson of the management committee, while Annafugasia Kawana and John Nauodoeb were re-elected as ordinary members of the management committee.
Elias Kandetu for (Nudo) and Jeremia Karukua for DTA were elected as councillors.
Speaking to Nampa after her re-election, Iipinge said she feels honoured and confident because people still trust her to lead the council despite an array of challenges it faced during the year.
Iipinge said the council however also achieved a lot during its one-year reign, such as the improvement of underground infrastructure sewage pipes that were small and caused constant blockages in the Freedom Square residential area.
“Five people could not flush their toilets at the same time, but now 100 people can flush their toilets and nothing will block the sewage,” she said.
Iipinge, who is a senior technician at the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry, and her council will serve for another 12 months.
The office-bearers are elected in terms of section 11 and section 21 of the Local Authorities Act, (Act 23 of 1992) as amended.
Swapo occupies five seats on the Gobabis town council, while Nudo and DTA occupy one seat each.
