WINDHOEK, 22 NOV (NAMPA) – The Namibia Boxing Federation (NBF) on Monday called off its National Amateur Boxing Championships that was slated for Opuwo in the Kunene Region from 23 to 26 November 2016.
NBF Public Relations Officer, Robert Haihambo said in a statement issued Monday that due to the national budget cut by Government, the federation cannot afford to host the event.
He said the government has supported the federation throughout the implementation of most of its programmes.
“But in an effort to avoid over dependence on state-funding and to create alternative sources of funding, the federation engaged the corporate world and business communities to fund the championships, but this has not yielded the expected results,” reads the statement.
Haihambo said the federation remains committed to fulfil its mandate to stage the event on a future date, yet to be decided.
About 500 amateur boxers from all 14 regions in Namibia were scheduled to showcase their talent in Opuwo.
A referee and judges workshop scheduled for 21 to 23 November was also called off.
