OUTJO, 20 NOV (NAMPA) - Outjo Municipality on Friday launched a social fund aimed at assisting communities facing socio-economic hardships and youth who need scholarships.
Vice President, Nickey Iyambo officially launched the initiative during a fundraising gala dinner held at Etoshapoort Community Hall.
More than N.dollars 600 000 in cash and pledges were gathered at the dinner attended by nearly 400 people.
Outjo Mayor Marius Sheya initiated the idea of the Mayoral Prosperity Fund of the Municipality of Outjo.
Speaking at the gala dinner, he expressed gratitude to see so many community members and people from all across Namibia with goodwill supporting the idea.
Outjo will never be the same again for our people who suffer unexpected losses of properties through shack fires, or the lack of funds for those students from impoverished families who pass Grade 12 with good symbols.
Sheya said the fund will assist community members faced with socio-economic hardships or struck by natural and man-made disasters.
The fund has Board members who will sit when necessary to approve or reject applications for financial assistance.
Sheya explained the Fund will concentrate its support on students studying towards health programmes, natural sciences, local sport activities, development of the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and the general social economic well-being of Outjo residents.
Several speakers at the event praised the idea, saying it is a good initiative aimed at fighting poverty among the Outjo communities.
The dinner was attended by community members, farmers and businesspeople in the Outjo district; and regional and local authority councillors from Otjozondjupa, Kavango East, Kavango West, Khomas, Oshana, Omusati, Kunene, Erongo and //Karas regions.
