Omeya accident claims six lives

WINDHOEK, 08 NOV (NAMPA) - An Iveco bus on Tuesday morning hit a tree along the Windhoek-Rehoboth road near the Omeya Golf Estate, killing six passengers on the spot.
Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Chief Inspector, Slogan Matheus told Nampa five other people sustained serious injuries and 13 suffered minor injuries.
“The accident took place between midnight and 01h00 on the main road between Windhoek and Rehoboth, almost 30km from Windhoek,” Matheus said.
The bus, en route from Rundu to Noordoewer in the //Kharas Region, was carrying 24 occupants including the driver.
Matheus said preliminary investigations indicate the driver had swerved from hitting a cow crossing the road and hit the tree.
The injured persons were transported by ambulance to State hospitals in Windhoek.
Matheus said the names of the deceased persons cannot be revealed as their next of kin have not yet been formally informed.
Police investigations into the matter are underway.
