WINDHOEK, 03 NOV (NAMPA) - SI !Gobs Secondary School in Omaruru is staging a concert on Friday in efforts to raise funds for the reconstruction of a boys’ hostel block destroyed in a fire in 2009.
According to Gotty Tjinyama, one of the teachers organising the event, the school needs N.dollars 1.3 million to restore the hostel block that can take up to 60 learners.
“We have approached various companies to assist and Social Security Commission will donate N.dollars 20 000, while Erongo RED has committed to funding part of the reconstruction and has asked us to source quotations from construction companies,” Tjinyama said in a telephonic interview with Nampa on Wednesday.
He hope to raise more funds from pledges during the concert.
The school choir and renowned Western Youth Choir of Namibia, as well as many other local upcoming artists, are expected to perform at the concert.
They have so far sold tickets worth over N.dollars 2 000. Tickets will also be sold at the door.
“We cannot just wait for government to one day give us money, we are meeting government halfway through this,” Tjinyama said.
He further said although there are other pressing issues at the hostel such as a shortage of mattresses and beds, the renovation of the hostel block is their main priority.
Fiona Leysieffer, a volunteer from Germany at the school, is also working with other volunteers to raise funds from friends and family in their home country.
“After the concert we will see how much still needs to be raised,” Leysieffer said while speaking to this news agency on Wednesday.
Entry to the concert is N.dollars 10.
