Budget reduced by N.dollars 3.5 billion

WINDHOEK, 27 OCT (NAMPA) – The National Budget has been cut by N.dollars 3.5 billion due to the financial challenges faced by the State.
This was revealed by Finance Minister Calle Schlettwein when he tabled the Appropriation Amendment Bill in the National Assembly (NA) on Thursday.
The amendment aims to increase and decrease certain allocations to meet the financial requirements of the State during the remainder of the 2016/17 financial year that ends March next year.
The appropriated amount of N.dollars 61 120 637 000 was amended by alterations to 31 out of 35 votes/Schedules by N.dollars 3 500 000 000.
Last year, only 27 out of the 35 votes/Schedules' appropriated amounts were reduced.
This year, four votes/Schedules' appropriated amounts were increased, with Agriculture, Water and Forestry standing out with the largest increase of N.dollars 223 022 000.
Some increases in allocations were done to, among many, fund the completion of the Neckartal Dam; deal with drought-relief; cater for expanded coverage of the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) programme; the Visa Stickers project, mass housing and higher education.
The defence ministry stands out with the largest decrease of N.dollars 653 794 000.
The votes:
•Office of the President, which had an appropriated amount of N.dollars 679 129 000, was amended to N.dollars 642 878 000.
•Office of the Prime Minister – from N.dollars 484 744 000 to N.dollars 510 486 000.
•National Assembly – from N.dollars 227 628 000 to N.dollars 203 033 000.
•Office of the Auditor-General – from N.dollars 85 498 000 to N.dollars 74 924 000.
•Home Affairs and Immigration - from N.dollars 497 343 000 to N.dollars 470 196 000.
•Safety and Security – from N.dollars 5 134 567 000 to N.dollars 4 992 867 000.
•International Relations and Cooperation – from N.dollars 900 862 000 to N.dollars 867 744 000.
•Defence – from N.dollars 6 600 539 000 to N.dollars 5 946 745 000.
•Finance – from N.dollars 3 290 898 000 to N.dollars 3 078 127 000.
•Education, Arts and Culture – from N.dollars 12 794 882 000 to N.dollars 12 322 672 000.
•National Council – from N.dollars 146 533 000 to N.dollars 112 144 000.
•Gender Equality and Child Welfare – from N.dollars 858 051 000 to N.dollars 982 070 000.
