OTJIWARONGO, 26 OCT (NAMPA) - The Swapo Party Elders Council at Otjiwarongo has strongly condemned and objected to demands for the immediate removal of the municipal chief executive officer (CEO) and constituency councillor.
The Swapo Party Elders’ Council Otjiwarongo wing on Wednesday called a media conference to express their concerns and denouncement of pensioners’ demands to remove Otjiwarongo Municipality CEO, Ismael /Howoseb and Otjiwarongo Constituency Councillor, Julius Neumbo.
The media conference took place at the Swapo Party headquarters in the presence of Otjozondjupa Regional Governor, Otto Iipinge and regional party co-ordinator Susan Hikopua.
Some Swapo Party Elders’ Council members reacted angrily at the conference, saying they were part of the street march but the petition handed over did not contain any of their concerns.
“It is regrettable to mention that the pensioners who were used in the demonstration last week were told by organisers to join in order to force the municipality to write off their debt and reduce the cost of water tariffs for them,” reads the statement from the elders council here.
The ruling party council called on pensioners not to be “used by individuals who have personal vendettas with the serving leaders.”
On Thursday, nearly 100 pensioners at Otjiwarongo staged a peaceful demonstration from the Orwetoveni residential area to the office of Iipinge where they handed over a petition addressed to the Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Sophia Shaningwa.
In the petition, they said Neumbo has failed to establish a proper communication strategy between his office and community members alleging that as a result, no community meetings have taken place since he took office some two years ago.
Neumbo, who is also the Chairperson of the Otjozondjupa Regional Council, is apparently never in office and “travels too much” to benefit from subsistence and travel allowances.
The pensioners alleged that he also uses a government vehicle for private purposes during weekends.
They also demanded that /Howoseb be removed from his position for allegedly mismanaging municipal funds and not reacting to problems affecting the community.
One of the organisers of the demonstration, Benjamin Khairabeb, on Wednesday told Nampa he will respond to the concerns of the Swapo Party Elder’s Council on 02 November 2016.
