OPUWO, 20 OCT (NAMPA) – George Kamseb, the chief regional officer (CRO) of the Kunene Regional Council, is not aware of his suspension.
“I don’t know if I am suspended,” Kamseb told Nampa when approached for comment Thursday.
The regional council’s chairperson, Julius Kaujova told this agency earlier a council meeting which took place Tuesday decided to suspend Kamseb until the conclusion of investigations into allegations, amongst others of tender irregularities, against him.
Nampa is in possession of a letter written by Kaujova, informing the CRO that he has been placed on leave with full benefits for an unspecified period starting from Thursday, 20 October.
However, Kamseb reported for duty on Thursday.
Kamseb, who is the chairperson of the regional tender board, stands accused of tampering with the tender processes.
“Some tenders expired in August but were renewed without council’s approval and consultants are appointed without the know-how of the council,” Kaujova said.
Other allegations are that there was unauthorised expenditure of council funds. An independent auditor will be appointed to look into the matter.
The council has apparently also established that the regional strategic plan has not been updated since 2012 and the region has been operating from a draft plan.
Another allegation is that the council advertised more than 30 positions in June but no appointments have been made, which the council alleges was done deliberately.
