OTJIWARONGO, 13 OCT (NAMPA) - A 25-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday on charges of abortion and attempted concealment of birth at Okahandja.
Spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha told Nampa Wednesday the woman allegedly aborted a six- to seven-month-old foetus of a boy at her house the same day.
The woman then wrapped the foetus in a plastic bag and placed it in a handbag.
“She then hired a taxi to assist her with transport and headed in the direction of Karibib,” Mbeha explained.
At approximately 40 kilometres on the Karibib-Okahandja road, the woman allegedly told the taxi driver to stop and she got off with the handbag.
A few minutes later, some police officers from Okahandja who were tipped-off by a member of the public, also arrived at the spot and confronted her.
The woman was still holding the handbag that contained the dead foetus.
She was arrested on the spot and taken to the Okahandja State Hospital, where she is receiving medical attention.
The woman is under police guard and is expected to appear in the Okahandja Magistrate’s Court during this week.
She already has a four-year-old son.
Police investigations continue.
