WINDHOEK, 29 SEP (NAMPA) – A veld fire outbreak was reported on the outskirts of Windhoek's North-Western area between Mountain Lodge and Daan Vijioen on Monday.
In a media statement issued on Wednesday, City of Windhoek (CoW) said the fire started at about 18h10 on Monday and has affected the mountains and farmland in the area, limiting access and destroying vegetation.
CoW fire-fighting teams have been deployed on the ground and have so far received assistance from Namibian Police Force (NamPol), who provided a helicopter for aerial view assessment. NamPol has also been monitoring and directing the fire-fighting team on the ground to critical areas and hot spots, the statement noted.
Thus far, the estimated burned area in Ongos farm is 4 800 hectares, located to the North of Daan Viljoen Nature Reserve and West of Nubuamis.
“We received assistance from the Brakwater community and we managed to protect Brakwater area, Daan Viljoen and Mountain lodge,” said the statement.
According to CoW, no casualties or damage to infrastructure has been reported, except the destruction of vegetation on the mountains.
The CoW urged the public not to panic, as progress has been made in containing and extinguishing the fire.
“Our Emergency Services with the assistance of the Namibian Defence Force is hard at work to extinguish the fire by all means,” said the statement.
