WINDHOEK, 28 SEP (NAMPA) The Khomas Swapo-Party Youth League (SPYL) on Tuesday congratulated all athletes who took part in the 2016 Rio Olympics and Paralympics in Brazil.
We salute the athletes who managed to win medals, particularly the Paralympic athletes. These special athletes are really very special champions as can be witnessed in their performances by bringing back gold, silver and bronze medals from an international event of such magnitude.
This also confirms the saying that disability is not an inability, reads a statement issued by the youth wing on Tuesday.
It said most of the Paralympians live in abject poverty with a lack of basic services such as running water and toilets a situation that needs urgent attention to restore these athletes dignity.
Nine athletes with disabilities represented Namibia in Rio de Janeiro from 07 to 18 September and two of them brought home medals: Ananias Shikongo (one gold, two bronze) and Johannes Nambala (two silvers).
None of the 10 able-bodied Namibian athletes returned with medals from the Olympic Games held from 05 to 21 August in Rio.
On the current crisis currently engulfing football in Namibia, the Khomas SPYL expressed disappointment on how the issue is being handled, and called on the responsible authorities to act with urgency to help avoid serious social implications like hundreds of football players going jobless.
It urged the private sector to grab the investment opportunity that is presenting itself by the current situation.
Sports and football, in particular, is an untapped massive potential business boom waiting to explode, it noted.
Meanwhile, the branch also congratulated the winners of the Khomas SPYL sports festival which ended on Saturday.
Members and sympathisers of the SPYL participated in volleyball, football and netball.
We regard sports as a true unifier and a genuine educator of teamwork which also has a valuable return in health and fitness, talent show and personal satisfaction, the statement quoted Sam Shafoixuna Hamupolo, the Khomas SPYL spokesperson, as saying.
