ONGWEDIVA, 27 SEP (NAMPA) - A 32-year-old man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a belt in the custody of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) at Ondangwa in the Oshana Region on Tuesday.
Confirming the incident, Sergeant Frieda Shikole of NamPol’s Public Relations Unit in the region said the deceased hanged himself in a cell at the police station, where he was waiting to be taken to court Tuesday morning.
He was arrested on Sunday after he reportedly inflicted multiple wounds over the body of his lover, following a quarrel over missing condoms.
Police investigations have it that the suspect apparently left condoms in the bedroom of his 26-year-old girlfriend the previous day, but she declined to explain what happened to the condoms when he asked about it the following day.
The incident took place in the girlfriend’s dwelling at the Omashaka location in Ondangwa.
Police said the girlfriend was stabbed 14 times: five times in the chest, five times in the back, three times on the left arm, and once in the left thigh.
She is admitted to the Onandjokwe Lutheran Hospital since Sunday.
“Police inquiries into the matter are in full swing,” said Inspector Slogan Matheus of the Public Relations Division at the NamPol headquarters in Windhoek.
The identity of the deceased could not be immediately released as the next of kin were not informed yet.
