KEETMANSHOOP, 08 SEP (NAMPA) – Private engineering company, Knight Piésold Consulting donated over 80 blankets worth N.dollars 20 000 to pensioners of the Daan Viljoen Old Age Home at Keetmanshoop on Wednesday.
A few months ago, resident senior citizens of the State-owned old age home approached the Keetmanshoop Municipality to assist in cash or kind to help ease their daily hardships.
The town council in turn communicated the request of the elderly to private business companies, seeking contributions.
Municipality public relations officer Dawn Kruger said it was important for all sectors to join hands to help vulnerable people in their communities.
The old age home accommodates 34 self-sustaining pensioners who pay a monthly fee of four per cent of their income for their stay at the facility.
They are responsible for their own cooking and cleaning and the provision of their amenities.
“Most of us rely on the pension money from Government and we take care of everything with that money,” pensioner Anna Forbes said.
Senior citizen Anna Hartung was moved by the donation.
“Knight Piésold has done something very beautiful by giving us these blankets, we really appreciate it,” she said.
The blankets were handed over by Keetmanshoop Mayor Gaudentia Krohne, Councillor Charles Pieter and municipality Chief Executive Officer Desmond Basson.
Krohne called on the business community to give whatever they can to help alleviate poverty in society.
