OPUWO, 05 SEP (NAMPA) – The Red Cross Society on Friday handed over 97 blankets and 45 mattresses to learners of the Okapembambu Primary School.
The items were handed over by the regional chairperson of the society in Kunene, Uahekua Herunga.
Receiving the donation, Head of Department (HOD) for Mobile Schools in the region Anna Engombe appealed to the learners to take good care of the blankets and mattresses.
Head teacher at the school, Njandereeko Humu told this agency the donation will not only help learners to sleep comfortably, but will also motivate other children who do not attend school because they do not have a place to sleep.
Learners at Okapembambu sleep in tents, which during the day are used as classrooms. Those who are fortunate enough push desks together to form a bed, while others sleep on the ground sharing a few blankets.
The school also faces a challenge of food for the 202 learners.
“We are only left with three bags of maize meal as we speak, and from there we don’t know,” a worried Humu told Nampa.
Okapembambu is situated about 38 kilometres west of Opuwo.
