WINDHOEK, 19 AUG (NAMPA) – The Ministry of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare has finalised the blueprint on wealth redistribution and poverty in Namibia as a policy document.
The report contains interventions to address poverty, following consultations held countrywide last year by President Hage Geingob; Minister of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare Zephania Kameeta; several cabinet ministers and advisors to the Office of the President.
Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Tjekero Tweya made the announcement on the blueprint as approved by Cabinet during a media briefing on decisions made during the 12th Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday.
Tweya said Cabinet directed offices, ministries and agencies (OMAs) to support the blueprint and take responsibility for the interventions under their respective mandates, and to ensure that they avail resources to implement the approved interventions in the document.
The blueprint will foster the implementation of a Basic Income Grant (BIG) and various policies aimed at addressing poverty, and lay out wealth redistribution strategies through various taxation modalities; prudent land distribution in both rural and urban areas; as well as skills development and employment creation policies.
Tweya also indicated that a workshop will be held for various OMAs to develop an implementation strategy and further ensure support and cooperation with the implementing OMAs.
