Man dead after hit by car in Usakos

SWAKOPMUND, 18 AUG (NAMPA) - A 50-year-old man died on the spot after he was run over by a car on Wednesday evening at Usakos.
The Namibian Police Force’s (NamPol) Detective Chief Inspector, Erastus Iikuyu identified the deceased as Hendrick Meintjies.
He said the accident happened around 19h50, about a kilometre outside Usakos towards Karibib, while Meintjies was attempting to cross the road.
He said a Hyundai sedan travelling from Karibib allegedly hit the man.
Iikuyu said there is no criminal charges laid against the driver.
The next of kin were already informed.
“I would like to warn drivers to be careful and avoid such accidents and deaths. The pedestrians must also make sure it is safe before they cross the roads,” Iikuyu cautioned.
In a separate incident in Usakos’ Samstaan settlement, a case of rape was reported to the police.
The incident allegedly occurred between 03h00 and 04h00 Thursday morning.
Iikuyu said a 25-year-old female was on her way home from the shebeen, when a 21-year-old suspect allegedly grabbed her and dragged her into nearby bushes, where he threatened her with a knife and raped her.
“The suspect is known but he is not yet arrested,” said Iikuyu.
