Welwitschias lose against SWD Eagles

WINDHOEK, 14 AUG (NAMPA) - The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias lost 23-54 against SWD Eagles in the loser’s section of their Currie Cup First Division match in George, South Africa on Friday.
Six teams that finished bottom of the 2016 Currie Cup qualifying rounds compete among each other in the Currie Cup First Division.
In the qualifying round earlier in the season, the Namibians lost all 14 games. They lost 96-5 to the Eagles in that round.
On Friday, the Namibian outfit stood their ground in the first half as they made the hosts work hard for their points before the halftime break, which ended 17-9 for the Eagles.
The Eagles showed their dominance by scoring the first points of the second half but the Welwitschias cut the deficit to 10 points when prop AJ de Klerk scored a try that was converted.
The Eagles extended their lead with three more tries and a penalty try, but the Welwitschias replied with a late consolation try from Lesley Klim to improve their points on the day.

The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias’ next game of the competition will be against the Leopards on 20 August at the Hage Geingob Stadium, Windhoek.
The Namibian team is made up of only local players for the 2016 edition of the Currie Cup, a South African provincial tournament.
