Day of the Namibian Child marked on Saturday

WINDHOEK, 27 SEP (NAMPA) – The Day of the Namibian Child, aimed at raising awareness of the plight of children in the country, will be commemorated on Saturday.
The day is commemorated on 28 September every year.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Erastus Negonga said in a media statement availed to Nampa on Friday the ministry has organised a number of celebratory events countrywide in collaboration with regional councils countrywide.
The main event will take place at Noordoewer in the //Karas Region and will be addressed by the Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, Rosalia Nghidinwa.
The day will be commemorated under the theme ‘Eliminating harmful social and cultural practices affecting children: Our collective responsibility’.
On 28 September 1990, Namibia as a country ratified the United Nations (UN) Convention on the Rights of the Child, and consequently the day was consequently declared a national day by Cabinet in the year 2000.
