WINDHOEK, 11 AUG (NAMPA) - Namibian boxing medal hopeful Junius Jonas was released from a Rio de Janeiro jail earlier Thursday and is available for his scheduled fight later today.
Jonas was arrested on Sunday on charges of sexual assault and attempted rape.
Team Namibia officials told Nampa from Brazil that Jonas made the Wednesday weigh-in session for his fight set to commence at 21h45 Namibian time against French boxer Hassan Amzile.
Details of his release are still sketchy.
Jonas was the second 2016 Olympic boxer to be arrested for sexual assault allegations after Moroccan boxer Hassan Saada was detained last Friday for two similar offenses.
Saada missed his Olympic bout last Saturday.
Jonas is a Commonwealth and All Africa silver medalist, and was Namibia’s flag bearer at the opening ceremony of the games which commenced on Saturday.
