WINDHOEK, 05 AUG (NAMPA) – The Chairperson of the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC), Joel Matheus has called on the Under-17 football team to show courage and determination when they step on to the field this weekend.
Namibia will face Congo in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Under-17 African Cup of Nations second-round first-leg match at the Independence Stadium on Saturday.
The match kicks off at 12h00.
The Baby Warriors on Tuesday returned from Mauritius where they won the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) Under-17 Championship on Sunday.
Speaking at a media conference in the capital on Friday to welcome the team back, Matheus called on the young footballers to make the country proud when they face Congo.
“Your achievements in Mauritius will give other athletes hope, especially those currently in Brazil for the Olympic Games. I hope they will draw inspiration from what you did so they can win silverware for the country and make us proud just like you did.
“When you face Congo tomorrow, I want you to step on to the field showing the same character and determination as in the Cosafa championships and beat your opponents. Your only objective tomorrow should be winning, nothing else,” he said.
The return leg of the Under-17 African Cup of Nations second-round match will be played on 21 August in Congo-Brazzaville at the Alphonse Massemba-Debat Stadium.
The winner of the two legs will progress to the third round of the competition.
