Oshana Region wins 2016 disabilities championship

OSHAKATI, 04 AUG (NAMPA) – Oshana Heroes Sport Club chairperson Temus Kamati says the sport event for people with disabilities held at Oshakati on Saturday was successful.
His team won the Oshana Heroes' Athletics Championships against people with disabilities from Oshana, Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshikoto, Kavango East, Khomas, Erongo, Kavango West, Hardap, //Kharas and Zambezi regions who participated in the event.
Kamati’s club hosted the event for the 14th consecutive year.
Field items, track events and wheelchair basketball were the main sport codes featured in the championships.
Speaking to Nampa on Thursday, Kamati said the Oshana Region was declared the championships’ overall winner for winning in most of the sport codes.
Erongo, a combination of Kavango East and West regions and //Kharas followed the Oshana Region in the second, third and fourth positions, respectively.
Maria Simon from Kavango is the best female athlete of the tournament and Ismael Shipati from Erongo is the best male athlete.
The Wheel Ability Team B from Khomas Region is champion in the wheelchair basketball competition after beating Oshana Wheelchair Basketball Team A 26-23 in the final.
Winners Wheel Ability B, scooped the top prize of a floating trophy, gold medals for all team members and N.dollars 600.
Oshana Wheelchair Basketball Team A received silver medals and N.dollars 400 in second place, and Oshana Wheelchair Basketball Team B took bronze medals as the third position prize.
Consulting Services Africa availed N.dollars 40 000 as the main sponsor, while the Namibia College of Open Learning at Ongwediva, Nexus, Namibia Dairies, KA Brown Surgery, ENH Civilian and M&M Caterers provided additional sponsorships.
The Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service sponsored transport for athletes from and to their respective regions.
The Oshana Region was also the defending champion of the championships.
