Oshakati hosting Oshana Heroes' Athletics Championships

OSHAKATI, 27 JUL (NAMPA) - The Oshana Heroes' Athletics Championships will see people living with disabilities from 11 regions compete in a variety of sports disciplines at Oshakati this Saturday.
The Oshana Heroes’ Club, a local sports club for people living with disabilities, is hosting the event for the 14th consecutive year.
Participants from the Oshana, Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshikoto, Kavango East and West, Khomas, Erongo, Hardap, //Kharas and Zambezi regions will participate in this year’s gathering.
Sports officer in the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service for the Oshana Region, Toini Kasheeta told Nampa in an interview at Oshakati on Tuesday the main sports’ codes to feature in Saturday’s championships are track and field items and wheelchair basketball.
“We want the championships to be a professional event and as such, each region is anticipated to select just 20 of its best athletes as participants,” Kasheeta said.
Consulting Services Africa has once again availed N.dollars 40 000 as the main sponsor, while the Namibia College of Open Learning at Ongwediva, Nexus, Namibia Dairies, KA Brown Surgery, ENH Civilian and M and M Caterers have also pledged to provide additional sponsorships.
“The ministry provides transport for athletes from and to their respective regions,” Kasheeta said.
Oshana Heroes’ Club chairperson Temus Kamati said the Oshana Region is the defending champion.
The region’s governor, Clemens Kashuupulwa has been invited to officiate at the opening of the championships Saturday morning.
