GIBEON, 25 JUL (NAMPA) – Eduard Afrikaner was elected as the chief of the /Hoa /Aran //Aixa //Aes clan over the weekend.
The Afrikaner Traditional Authority held the election at Farm Koherab, situated 50 kilometres west of Gibeon, on Saturday.
The 68-year-old Eduard and Frank Afrikaner, son of the late chief Hendrina Afrikaner, contested the election which was overseen by representatives of the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) and members of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol).
The previous chief, Hendrina Afrikaner, died in a car accident in 2011. The /Hoa /Aran //Aixa //Aes clan was then split in two as Isak //Gowaseb and Petrus Olman were locked in a dispute over who should lead the authority.
Eduard Afrikaner told Nampa it was decided in a council meeting on 01 October 2011 to appoint six senior council members on a rotational basis to take decisions on behalf of the clan.
“I was not present when the decision was constituted under Afrikaner customary law and the Traditional Authority Act as well as the supreme authority, which is the chief’s council. The meeting decided the chief's council should remain the leading organ of the clan until we elect a new chief,” Afrikaner said.
A total of 328 eligible voters registered for the election between last Wednesday and Friday, with 321 eventually voting on Saturday through the casting of a ballot.
Eduard Afrikaner received 178 votes and Frank Afrikaner, 143.
Addressing clan members after the election, Eduard Afrikaner said the victory is not his alone, but also a victory for the entire Afrikaner clan.
“We have a tough couple of years behind us and with this result the Afrikaner clan is the winner. It is a historical day for us and together as a united clan, we can achieve a lot together,” he said, adding that he will ensure that Frank Afrikaner is one of the new council members.
In his congratulatory remarks, Frank Afrikaner wished the new chief the best of luck.
“You are my chief, our chief and I will be 100 per cent behind you. I accept your offer of making me part of history and including me during this new era,” Frank said to loud applause from clan members.
Frank Afrikaner also said all differences should be a thing of the past and urged the clan to support Eduard Afrikaner.
The coronation of the Chief Elect will be announced at a later date, after the council members meet.
