WINDHOEK, 24 JUL (NAMPA) - The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias lost their last group game and 14th game in a row of the 2016 Currie Cup against DHL Western Province at the Hage Geingob Stadium on Saturday.
The match ended 07-71.
The Namibian team finished last of 15 teams on the log with one point, while victory helped the DHL Western Province end the season five points ahead of the second-placed Griquas.
The Welwitschias only managed to run in one try in the 15th minute through Mahco Prinsloo and Justin Nel converted from the spot. The Western Province side ran in five tries in the first half but missed twice from the spot to take a half-time lead of 07-31.
In the second half the visiting team still came out the stronger side as they ran in six more tries and only failed to convert from the spot once.
The Welwitschias tried all they could but the Western Province defence was too strong for them as they kept them at bay.
The game ended 07-71.
Speaking to the media after the game, Welwitschias Captain Leneve Damens (c), said the team has grown throughout the whole competition and with another run in the competition they will get the win they have been looking for.
I would like to thank the fans who always came out in numbers to support us, we are grateful to all of you. I know we did not win any game as you might have wanted it to be but with another run in the competition we will win, he said.
The Namibian team is made up of only local-based players for the 2016 edition of the South African provincial tournament.
