OTJIWARONGO, 12 JUL (NAMPA) - Four chess players from Otjiwarongo have qualified for the national team which is preparing to participate in the African Youth Championships in South Africa next month.
The 2016 African Youth Championships take place in Port Elizabeth from 20 to 29 August.
The four Otjiwarongo-based chess players that qualified for the national team in the capital on 26 June 2016 are Joshua Negumbo, Taisha Uris, Himumuine Kamazembua and Uvanga Vatiraije.
The coach of the Otjozondjupa chess team, Ichnecuis Kavitjene told Nampa in an interview on Monday his learners are mentally prepared to participate in the African championship.
“But for us to do so, we need sponsorship as each of us is expected to contribute money for accommodation, meals and tracksuits,” he said.
Kavitjene said each participant has to contribute N.dollars 13 000.
He explained that the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sport and Culture has only agreed to provide transport for the team selected to participate in the African Youth Championships.
Kavitjene said any community member who wishes to contribute can do so through the players’ schools - Otjiwarongo Senior Secondary School and Paresis Senior Secondary School.
The four participants on Monday paid a courtesy call on the Otjozondjupa Region’s Education Director, Simon Tsuseb at his office in Otjiwarongo.
