OSHAKATI, 10 JUL (NAMPA) – Members of the Association of Local Authorities in Namibia (ALAN) have elected Oshakati mayor Katrina Shimbulu as their president for the next five years.
Shimbulu was elected during ALAN’s 57th congress held at Oshakati from Wednesday until the early morning hours of Saturday.
Keetmanshoop management committee chairperson Gabriel Freyer was elected as ALAN vice-president.
Shimbulu is taking over from Agnes Kafula, the former mayor of the City of Windhoek and now Swapo party member of the National Assembly, while Freyer replaces Leonard Jona, the chairperson of the Eenhana Town Council’s management committee.
Speaking to Nampa on Saturday, Shimbulu expressed appreciation for her election as the new leader of ALAN and commended the association’s membership for trusting her.
She explained that only the position of president and vice-president are contested during the congress as per the association’s procedures.
Fifty-four out of 57 local authorities in Namibia were represented at the congress that was officially opened by Urban and Rural Development Minister Sophia Shaningwa on Wednesday.
