OTJIWARONGO, 07 JUL (NAMPA) - A 31-year-old female member of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) allegedly committed suicide by shooting herself twice in the stomach at the Grootfontein Airforce Base on Wednesday.
The deceased has been identified as Mary Kashi Simunja, who originally comes from Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region.
“Her close relatives have been informed of her death,” said the spokesperson of the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) in the Otjozondjupa Region, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha.
Mbeha said Simunja had reported for night duty at the Air Force Base inside the Grootfontein Military Headquarters.
It is alleged that shortly after Simunja commenced duty at approximately 18H30, she was seen armed with an AK 47 official weapon and walked few metres away from her duty point. Two shots were heard shortly after.
Her colleagues found Simunja lying on the ground in a pool of blood with two gun wounds in the stomach.
She was rushed to the military hospital inside the base where she was declared dead on arrival.
She did not leave behind any suicide note and the motive of her suicide is still unknown.
Simunja leaves behind three children aged 16, 6, and an eleven month old baby boy.
Police investigations in the matter continue.
