KATIMA MULILO, 06 JUL (NAMPA) – A student of the University of Namibia (UNAM) at Katima Mulilo was Wednesday shot dead in an apparent botched robbery.
The student, identified as the 21-year-old Mubita Dennis Mubita, was shot dead by a security guard during the early hours of Wednesday.
It is alleged that Mubita and two other unknown men tried to break into a vehicle parked at the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) regional centre at Chotto settlement.
According to Namibian Police Force (NamPol) regional crime investigation and co-ordination staff officer, Chief Inspector Sinvula Lyomba, the suspect in the shooting is still being questioned and has not yet been formally charged.
Lyomba told Nampa preliminary information obtained at the crime scene indicates that Mubita was shot with the service gun of the security guard, after he and his two accomplices had allegedly broken the passenger window of the car belonging to Royal Security Services.
Lyomba said when the man was shot, his accomplices managed to escape into the bushes.
It is not clear if any items were stolen from the vehicle.
“Right now, all details are sketchy. We are yet to establish what really happened and what might have led to the shooting incident between 01h00 and 02h00. The crime scene indicates that there was an attempt to steal items from a vehicle parked outside the university centre. We are still questioning the suspect,” Lyomba said.
When Nampa visited the scene Wednesday morning, a crowd of curious onlookers were seen, trying to obtain information about what happened.
NamPol officers at the scene said the suspect had left the guarding post to relieve himself in a nearby bush when he heard a car window being smashed.
When the suspect ran in the direction of the sound, he allegedly saw three men attempting to open the vehicle and fired a warning shot to scare them off but they retaliated by throwing bricks at him.
The suspect then allegedly aimed his gun to shoot Mubita in the leg, but the bullet penetrated him under the left arm. Mubita died on the scene.
The suspect Wednesday reported to the Katima Mulilo Police Station that he shot and killed a thief at the centre he was guarding.
