KEETMANSHOOP, 04 JUL (NAMPA) - The Namibian Police Force (NamPol) have charged a 10-year-old boy with the murder of a 23-year-old man at Rehoboth on Sunday.
The accused and the deceased were cousins.
The boy allegedly shot and killed the deceased with a 9milimetre (mm) pistol at the Kuiltjies recreation area of Rehoboth on Sunday afternoon.
Nampa established that the boy’s father (name withheld to protect identity of underage suspect) made a first appearance in the Rehoboth Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of negligent handling of a firearm.
A date for the appearance of the boy is yet to be set, a police officer at the Rehoboth Police Station confirmed late Monday afternoon.
The minor was released into the care of his mother due to his age.
Namibian Police Commander for the Hardap Region Andries van der Byl told Nampa on Monday the accused and the deceased accompanied his father and another adult man to Kuiltjies, where the older men practiced target shooting.
“The two men each shot two rounds with the pistol. The father then went to his vehicle and put the firearm behind the car seat. The accused, followed by the deceased, then went to the car where the accused got hold of the firearm. A shot was heard and the deceased was seen falling down,” Van der Byl said.
The victim succumbed to his injuries on the way to the hospital.
