OTJIWARONGO, 02 JUL (NAMPA) - Two people were on Thursday arrested at Otjiwarongo after they were found in possession of suspected stolen dried game meat.
Acting Otjozondjupa Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner Moses Khairabeb told Nampa on Friday a 28-year-old woman and a man (age unknown) were found with dried meat suspected to be of an Oryx.
He said the suspects were arrested at the Otjiwarongo-Okakarara T-junction, where the police had set up a mobile police roadblock on Thursday morning at approximately 10h00.
The two suspects were in a minibus with the dried meat stashed in bags, apparently from Otjinakwi and Ondili farms situated next to each other alongside the Otjiwarongo-Osire gravel road.
Khairabeb said the minibus driver was not arrested after statements were obtained from him and other passengers in the bus. They were not directly linked to the suspects.
He thus called on all livestock farmers in the region to tirelessly count their animals on a daily basis and conduct regular patrols on their farms.
They should also report suspicious movement of poachers or cattle rustlers on their farms to the police for anti-poaching operations to be launched immediately.
Khairabeb also warned members of the public not to buy stolen properties, including meat, as it is a crime to be found in possession of stolen goods.
