OTJIWARONGO, 01 JUL (NAMPA) - A 66-year-old commercial farmer died on Thursday at the Tsumeb State Hospital after he was allegedly run over by a tractor being driven by his farmworker.
The incident occurred at Farm Klein Otavifontein, situated less than 10 kilometres east of Otavi in the Otjozondjupa Region.
Acting Otjozondjupa Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner Moses Khairabeb confirmed the incident on Friday, saying preliminary police investigations indicate that the now-deceased farmer was teaching his 24-year-old farmworker how to operate a tractor towing a plough.
It is alleged that the farmworker accidentally accelerated the tractor while the farmer was standing and talking to him between the rear and front tyres.
“The rear tyre knocked him down and ran over him, before the plough pulled him until the tractor came to a standstill,” said Khairabeb.
The farmer sustained severe body injuries and was taken to the Tsumeb State Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
A case of culpable homicide has been opened at the Otavi Police Station in connection with the incident.
Police investigations into the matter continue.
