Launch of food bank Thursday

WINDHOEK, 29 JUN (NAMPA) – President Hage Geingob will launch the first ever food bank here on Thursday.
The Ministry of Poverty Eradication and Social Welfare has organised the event set for the Fidel Castro Ruz Primary School in Katutura.
Government took the initiative in 2013 to establish a food bank to cater for the basic needs of impoverished Namibians, who have been scavenging and collecting expired food items from dumpsites. Then Deputy Prime Minister Marco Hausiku motivated Cabinet to approve the establishment of food banks countrywide.
The warehouse at the Office of the Prime Minister, currently used for drought relief food distribution, will be used in the meantime as a storage facility for food bank produce.
No building will be inaugurated at the launch on Thursday, but the first food distribution will commence at the school.
Local media reported last month that a N.dollars 130 million tender for the construction of the food bank was advertised, but Geingob stepped in and ordered Cabinet to cancel the contract because of the exorbitant costs for construction alone.
A pilot project for the food bank kicked off about three weeks ago in the Tobias Hainyeko and Samora Machel constituencies.
