16 Jun 2016 15:00pm
WINDHOEK, 16 JUN (NAMPA) – Malawi and Lesotho face each other Thursday afternoon at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in a last-ditch effort to proceed past the group stages of the Cosafa Castle Cup underway here.
Lesotho top the table with six points from two earlier Group B matches on a better goal difference (five goals-for). They only need a draw to advance to the group stages.
Malawi also have six points but are positioned second with four goals-for. They need to win the match in order to proceed.
This will be the third meeting between Malawi and Lesotho in the Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (Cosafa) Castle Cup.
Malawi won twice: 2-1 in 2005 and 1-0 three years later.
The winning goal in that second game was scored by Chiukepo Msowoya, who is captain of Malawi, at the 2016 Cosafa Castle Cup.
The winner of this final Group B game will face South Africa in the quarterfinals on Saturday at the Sam Nujoma Stadium, with kick-off slated for 15h00.
Both teams come into this match in rich goal-scoring form with Gabadinho Mhango having scored all three of Malawi’s goals in their 3-0 opening success over Angola, while Miracle Gabeya got the winner against Mauritius on his 20th birthday.
Lesotho’s five goals have come from Hlompho Kalake, Jeremea Kamela, Tumelo Khutlang, Sera Motebang and Jane Thaba-Ntso against Mauritius and Angola.
