WINDHOEK, 15 JUN (NAMPA) - A man found guilty last week of the death of his girlfriend in Walvis Bay in 2012, was on Wednesday sent to jail for eight years.
Otto Angula, 40, was last week found guilty of culpable homicide for causing the death of Martha Nakale, 32, when he hit her on the head with a piece of scrap metal at a dumpsite on 22 November 2012.
High Court Judge Alfred Siboleka imposed the punishment.
“The death occurred in a domestic setting and is a very serious offence. You overstepped the bounds of self-defence when you struck the deceased person, who was on the ground, with a piece of scrap metal a second time on the head,” said the judge.
In his evidence of mitigation before sentencing, Angula asked the court to show some kind of mercy and sentence him to only six years in prison.
Angula has been conducting his own defence after he parted ways with his State-funded defence lawyer Christian Nambahu at the start of the trial.
State Advocate Cliff Lutibezi appeared for the prosecution.
Angula was tried and punished in accordance with the provisions of the Combating of Domestic Violence of Act 2003.
