OSHAKATI, 21 SEP (NAMPA) – The boys from the Ashipala Senior Secondary School (SSS) in the Omusati Region are the champions of the football competition of the 10th Annual Old Mutual Far North Championships which ended here on Saturday.
The Far North Championships ended with the finals at the Oshakati Independence Stadium between the regional winners from Namibia’s four northern regions of Oshana, Ohangwena, Omusati and Oshikoto.
Ashipala SSS took over the crown from another Omusati-based school, the Ruacana High School, which failed to make it onto the finals this time around.
The Ashipala boys won a floating trophy, gold medals, a photocopy machine, some sports items and N.dollars 5 000.
They defeated their counterparts from the Gabriel Taapopi SSS in the Oshana Region in the final match by four goals to one.
The Ponhofi SSS from the Ohangwena Region won the third prize after beating Onguti SSS in the Oshikoto Region 2-0 in the third place play-off.
In the netball category, the Gabriel Taapopi SSS from Ongwediva once again won top honours after beating the Haudano SSS in the Omusati Region 44-40 in the final.
As the netball champions, the girls from Gabriel Taapopi SSS received the first prize of a floating trophy, gold medals, photocopier and N.dollars 5 000.
Gabriel Taapopi girls received the trophy permanently for winning it for the third consecutive year.
The Gabriel Taapopi football team and Haudano netball team each took home silver medals, N.dollars 3 000, a laptop computer and several sports items as runners-up.
The Ponhofi SSS and the Ehafo Combined School (CS), also from Ohangwena, each walked away with a fax machine, bronze medals, stationery and several sports items, as the third-best teams in the football and netball categories, respectively.
Onesmus Shivolo from the Ashipala SSS was crowned the best football player, while Elizabeth Hasheela from the Gabriel Taapopi SSS was the player of the tournament in netball.
The Old Mutual Far North Tournament was introduced in 2004 to cater for football and netball competitions for northern school teams.
It kicked off this year with a netball umpires’ coaching clinic for participants from the Oshana, Ohangwena, Omusati and Oshikoto regions on Thursday and Friday.
