ONDANGWA, 04 JUN (NAMPA) – The Ondonga Traditional Authority on Thursday held a meeting at Ondangwa to ask members of the Mangetti Farmers’ Association (MFA) to vote between two candidates for chairman of the association during an election set for 25 June.
The candidates are Shali Kamati and Ismael Shailemo.
Chairperson of that meeting and Ondonga senior headman for the Onalusheshete District, Eino Shondili Amutenya confirmed the meeting to Nampa the same day.
The MFA is an organisation for owners of farms in the Mangetti area of the Ondonga Traditional Authority’s Onalusheshete District.
It has for the past years experienced divisions in its membership, following the resignation of Kamati as vice-chairperson of the association in August 2006.
Kamati went on to form a faction together with some members of the association.
Shailemo remained chairperson of the MFA.
The controversy over the two MFA factions has resulted in further division and confusion among members of the association.
This prompted the Ondonga Traditional Authority to hold a meeting, under the chairmanship of Amutenya, at Oluno to seek a solution to the disputed MFA leadership.
“The meeting went well and all the participating farmers agreed that the two leaders (Shailemo and Kamati) be the only candidates on the 25th of this month when the new chairperson of the MFA will be elected as per the decision taken here today,” Amutenya said.
The winner will be declared chairperson of the MFA and the other will become vice-chairperson.
Amutenya said the decision to elect the new chairperson of the MFA was taken in the presence of Shailemo and Kamati without an objection from either.
Shailemo and Kamati declined to give their sides of the story when approached for comment.
