DTA to elect SG in July

WINDHOEK, 30 MAY (NAMPA) – DTA of Namibia will hold its Central Committee (CC) meeting in July to elect the party's secretary-general and deputy secretary-general.
This was one of the outcomes of the party's executive committee (exco)meeting held in the capital on Saturday.
The party's Acting Secretary-General, Elma Dienda said in a media statement issued on Monday the CC meeting will be held on 01 to 02 July in the capital.
Dienda, who is also a DTA Member of Parliament, has been in the acting position since June last year when former SG Vincent Kanyetu was suspended.
Kanyetu was suspended and subsequently expelled from the party along with the DTA’s regional coordinator for Kavango West Boniface Kashera and regional coordinator for Kavango East, Reinhilde Kudumo.
The decision was a result of the trio’s alleged involvement in the unsanctioned sale of the party’s regional office in Rundu without consent of the DTA leadership.
Dienda added that the party will also elect a deputy secretary-general and 40 members of the CC, pending approval of a new DTA draft constitution, which was up for review during the exco meeting.
Yvette Araes served as deputy secretary-general since the party's congress in September 2015.
Dienda said the election campaign is officially open as from 30 May 2016 at 12h00.
During the meeting, DTA President McHenry Venaani said there is a need to reduce the number of CC members from 100 to 40 and have them elected among DTA members from different regions.
“We are the only party allowing about 100 party members to attend the CC meeting and we have to reduce the number to at least 40 members,” he said.
Another resolution approved during the meeting was the adoption of the DTA Women's League and the DTA Youth League at their respective congresses in 2015.
The leadership has also formally given notice to all party members of a complete overhaul of the current DTA Constitution of 29 September 2001.
