Water wastage dismays RDP at Helao Nafidi

OHANGWENA, 25 MAY (NAMPA) – The Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) is accusing the Helao Nafidi town management of not doing anything regarding the waste of water at the town.
RDP Secretary in the Ohangwena Region Timo Shikongo told Nampa recently that several suburbs of Helao Nafidi are experiencing the waste of water through leaking water pipes.
He alleged that residents receive high water charges on their bills every month as the Helao Nafidi Town Council is trying to recover the cost of wasted water.
“Instead of fixing the pipes that are leaking at the town for months, the town leadership is engaged in petty politics of sending its officials around town to remove RDP flags and posters from the trees or posts for no apparent reasons,” Shikongo argued.
He reminded the leadership of Helao Nafidi that Namibia is experiencing a water crisis and each of her citizens is anticipated to use water resources sparingly.
“I tried to bring it (water wastage) to the attention of the council in one of our meetings, but the mayor replied by telling me that it is not my duty,” said RDP member in the Helao Nafidi Town Council, Vilho Shimwooshili.
Shimwooshili said he is the only Helao Nafidi TC member who is not from the ruling Swapo party and as such, his council colleagues ignore his contributions in the chamber.
“They sideline me at all cost and they are determined not to consider my contributions in the council meetings,” he claimed.
Shimwooshili added that two separate public meetings by the Mayor Eliaser Nghipangelwa were recently held without him being informed.
“My fellow town councillors think they are sabotaging my existence in the council, but this is destructive towards President Hage Geingob’s call for all of us to pull in the same direction and to ensure that nobody should feel left out,” he noted.
Approached for comment on Tuesday, Nghipangelwa indicated that he was on Sunday informed by a certain woman that some residents at the Oshikango suburb are experiencing a water leakage and want the council to assist them.
“We are going to investigate the water wastage complaints and offer necessary assistance,” Nghipangelwa replied.
He also denied knowledge of the removal of RDP flags by his officials as per Shikongo’s concern, saying no decision was taken by the council for flags of political parties to be removed.
Regarding claims by Shimwooshili that he is not being informed of meetings, Nghipangelwa said the meetings held a few weeks ago were not meant for councillors’ attendance.
“He (Shimwooshili) is not being sidelined at all. I have personally organised the two meetings in question just to seek public input which I should share with all members of the council as our residents’ contribution to the town development initiative,” he stated.
Helao Nafidi, Eenhana and Okongo are the three local authorities in the Ohangwena Region.
