OSHINYADHILA, 18 SEP (NAMPA) - Two toddlers burned to death in their grandmother’s traditional bedroom at the Oshinyadhila No. 1 village in the Oshana Region on Tuesday morning.
The two children are cousins, and were identified as Teolidus Johannes (a girl of four years old) and Gustaf Uunona (a boy of two years old).
Johannes used to attend a kindergarten at the village, but did not go there on Tuesday.
The mother of one of the deceased children, Angelina Katau, told Nampa in an interview at the village on Wednesday that the grandmother was not at home when the fire broke out.
“The grandpa, who was home with them, was still asleep in a separate bedroom, and did not notice that the hut, where the children were in, was on fire,” Katau explained.
The grandfather was informed about the burning hut by road contractors who are busy construct a gravel road in the immediate vicinity.
“Members of the community also rushed to here to help extinguish the fire, but it was too late,” Katau said.
The children were burned beyond recognition. It is suspected that they played with matches inside their grandmother’s bedroom.
