NDIYONA, 09 MAY (NAMPA) – Ernestine Ndumba is the Swapo Party Women's Council (SPWC)’s new regional coordinator for Kavango East.
Ndumba is the former regional treasurer. She replaces Annakleta Shikerete who took up a seat in Parliament last year.
The position of coordinator was not contested during an ordinary regional conference held at the weekend and the women’s council during the conference endorsed Ndumba for the position.
The around 500 delegates to the regional conference also had to elect a regional mobiliser and treasurer.
The candidates who vied for the position of regional mobiliser were Johana Kapango and Johana Nehodi.
Kapango emerged victorious with 399 votes, while Nehodi obtained 117 votes.
Fransiska Likoro was elected regional treasurer after obtaining 389 votes against Roswitha Kahinda, who managed to garner 121 votes.
Speaking at the opening of the conference on Saturday, SPWC secretary Petrina Haingura encouraged delegates to elect leaders who are committed and responsible.
“The main goal in Swapo elections is to vote for a leader who will bring people together when they are divided, a leader who is a unifier and is strong,” she said.
Haingura added that leadership requires being humble and patient in order to execute all duties required by the party.
“The candidates who emerge victorious should strive to be transparent at all times, have a good attitude and should be good role models,” she told the gathering.
The conference was also attended by governor of the Kavango East Region, Samuel Mbambo and Rundu mayor Verna Sinimbo.
