WINDHOEK, 29 APR (NAMPA) – The Namibia Tennis Association has selected two teams of Under-12 and U-14 tennis players to represent the country in the three-legged International Tennis Federation (ITF)/Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) African Junior Tennis Circuit.
The 2016 ITF/CAT African junior tennis circuit takes place in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe from 02 to 05 May and Gaborone, Botswana from 07 to 10 May.
The two tournaments the junior teams will be participating in are grade two and three tournaments. Grade two tournaments are national level competitions intended for players of national and country standard, with several age groups, often including both singles and doubles events.
A media statement availed to Nampa on Wednesday by the NTA said the first grade two event will be conducted immediately after the Namibian juniors participate in a lower-ranked grade three event.
“The Namibian juniors will play against the best peers from other southern African countries.
The nine top juniors have the chance to gain international experience at the three prestigious grade two and three tournaments, which are played on hard surface,” read the statement.
Additionally, U-12 players Johannes Swartz and Hendrina Appolus and U-14 players Gena Moolman and Diken de Jong, who are the strongest players in their respective age categories, have been invited by the ITF to a special training camp, which started in Bulawayo on Thursday and ends Sunday.
Experienced coach Nqobilizwe Moyo who works for the FNB Namibian Tennis Association junior development programme will accompany the team of young Namibian hopefuls.
